Retiring laptops, servers or a whole data closet in the Bay Area? We compared five ITAD providers based in the region on certifications, services, service area and the paperwork they provide. For most businesses that want a provider holding its own current certification, Evergreen IT Solutions (Fremont) is our best overall pick, with Baytech Recovery (Hayward) close behind.
Key Takeaways
- Only two of the five providers we reviewed hold an R2v3 certification themselves: Evergreen IT Solutions and Baytech Recovery (both verified Active on the official SERI R2 directory, Nov 3, 2026).
- Several providers rely on certified downstream partners rather than holding certification directly. That can still work, but ask who the partner is and get it in writing.
- Always get a Certificate of Destruction with serial numbers for every data-bearing device.
- Service area varies a lot: from a 35-mile pickup radius to nationwide pickup.
- Google ratings shown are as of Nov 3, 2026; check current reviews before you choose.
What ITAD includes
IT asset disposition is the secure, documented retirement of business technology. A complete ITAD service usually includes:
- Pickup and logistics: scheduled collection from your office or data center.
- On-site data wiping (Purge): data destruction at your location before devices leave, using a Purge-level method aligned with NIST SP 800-88.
- Certificate of Destruction: a signed record listing each device and serial number and how its data was destroyed.
- Remarketing: testing and reselling usable equipment to recover value.
- Chain of custody: a documented trail from your door to final disposition.
How we compared providers (methodology)
We looked at Bay Area–based providers that offer ITAD to businesses and scored them on publicly available information:
- Certifications held by the company itself (R2v3, e-Stewards, NAID AAA), checked against the official SERI R2 directory where possible. Claims we could not confirm are marked "not verified."
- Services: pickup, on-site work, data destruction, Certificate of Destruction, remarketing, chain-of-custody reporting.
- Service area across the Bay Area and beyond.
- Documentation provided to the customer.
Research was done in November 2026 from each provider's website and public listings. We did not contact the providers. Google ratings and listing addresses were checked on Google Maps on Nov 3, 2026. If a provider listed here sees an error, contact us and we'll correct it.

Which ITAD provider fits your project?
- You need the provider itself to hold a current certification: Evergreen IT Solutions or Baytech Recovery.
- You want data wiped before equipment leaves your building: ask any provider to confirm on-site Purge in writing.
- You're a small office on the Peninsula and want simple pricing: GreenCitizen.
- You're retiring lab or semiconductor equipment: Excess Logic.
- You also need ongoing IT support, not just a one-time cleanout: see Anchor Point below.
Whichever you choose, ask for: the certificate number (and check it yourself), the downstream vendor list, a serial-level Certificate of Destruction, and the chain-of-custody record.

Frequently asked questions
What is ITAD? IT asset disposition is the secure, documented process of retiring business technology: collecting it, destroying the data, reselling or recycling the hardware, and providing records that prove it was done.
What is a Certificate of Destruction? A document from your ITAD provider listing each device (ideally by serial number), the data destruction method used and the date. Keep it for audits and compliance.
What does "Purge" mean for data destruction? Purge is a NIST SP 800-88 sanitization level that protects against recovery even with laboratory techniques. It's stronger than a basic "Clear" wipe.
Does my ITAD provider need its own R2 or e-Stewards certification? Not necessarily, but it gives you an independent audit of the company you're handing devices to. If a provider relies on downstream partners, ask which partners and check their certificates.
How do I verify a certification? Look up the company on the official SERI (R2), e-Stewards or i-SIGMA (NAID AAA) directories rather than relying on a logo on a website.
Can I get paid for old equipment? Often, yes. Providers that offer remarketing can resell working equipment and share or credit the value back to you.
